Thirteen Club Olympia Swim Team athletes traveled to Elkhart, Indiana this past weekend to compete in the Indiana Swimming Senior State Short Course Championship at the Elkhart Health and Aquatics Center. More than 700 of the best swimmers from Indiana representing 70 Club Teams from around the state competed in this “Open” Championship event primarily for swimmers 15 years an older who met very challenging qualifying time standards. This past weekend Indiana Swimming held its annual Short Course Age Group State Swimming Championships at the IU Natatorium on the campus of IUPUI in Indianapolis. 75 teams and almost 1000 swimmers who met difficult qualifying times throughout the short course season competed in the three day event. Age Group State is segmented into 10 and Under, 11 & 12, and 13 & 14 year old groupings by gender for competition. This past weekend 50 Club Olympia athletes competed in Indiana Swimming’s Southeast Divisional Championships at Center Grove High School. Divisional meets are the first in a series of annual championship meets at the end of the Short Course season with increasingly difficult qualifying standards which progress up through Senior State Championships and, for some swimmers, the Speedo Sectionals, which are USA Swimming’s regional championships. Three Club Olympia athletes competed this past weekend in a four-day meet hosted by The Swim Team (TST) Barracudas at El Toro High School in Lake Forest, California. Josh Pendleton (11), Tony Machavariani (9) and Shreyan Kulkarni (9) met the meet’s tough time standards and were able to compete against some of California’s and the Western United States’ best age group swimmers in the International Swim Coaches Association’s (ISCA) West Coast Elite Showcase Classic. Club Olympia Swim team members took part in two competitions last weekend in Fishers. Fishers was one of the regional sites for the 18-and-under National Championships. Brady Beyer, a 15-year-old sophomore at Columbus East, won the 200-yard breaststroke and 100 breaststroke for the Fishers site. He had six top-five finishes and made the finals in all eight of his events. Nalanie Cortez, a 15-year-old sophomore at Columbus North, won the 200 butterfly and 100 freestyle for the Fishers site. Club Olympia swimmers competed in the Santa Claus Classic, also at Fishers, against clubs from Indiana, Ohio and Michigan. Tony Machavariani won the 8-and-under 25 freestyle, 25 breaststroke, 50 backstroke, 50 butterfly, 100 freestyle, 25 backstroke, 50 breaststroke, 50 freestyle and 25 butterfly, placing in the top five for 10U in three of those events. Earlier this fall, Club Olympia competed in the Michiana Meet at Northridge High School against teams from northern Indiana and Michigan. With 20 swimmers, Club Olympia finished third behind Michiana and Northridge, both of which had more than 50 swimmers. Three COST swimmers returned to competition for the first time since last high school season in last weekend’s Return to the Nat meet at IUPUI’s Indiana University Natatorium. Entries were limited to 50 swimmers for each of the three sessions per day. Club Olympia swimmers Brady Beyer, Nalanie Cortez and Ashley Freel competed in the session for Speedo Sectional qualifiers.
