Thirteen Club Olympia Swim Team athletes traveled to Elkhart, Indiana this past weekend to compete in the Indiana Swimming Senior State Short Course Championship at the Elkhart Health and Aquatics Center. More than 700 of the best swimmers from Indiana representing 70 Club Teams from around the state competed in this “Open” Championship event primarily for swimmers 15 years an older who met very challenging qualifying time standards. Select Age Group level swimmers 14 years and younger could also compete provided they too met the same difficult time standards set forth for their older competitors.
By the close of the four day meet, Club Olympia had finished as the 14th best team in the state overall. The Club Olympia Lady Swimmers finished an even more impressive 9th place among the state’s women’s division.
15 year old Ashley Freel led Club Olympia with an impressive weekend performance. Freel won her first ever state title in the Women’s 200 Free and extended Club Olympia’s record of having at least one state champion each year (other than 2020, due to Covid cancelling all championship meets) since its formation in 2016.

Freel was also fourth over-all in the Women’s individual High Point standings. In addition to winning the 200 Free, Freel finished 4th in the 100 Free, 5th in the 200 Fly, 6th in the 100 Fly, 8th in the 100 Back and 11th in the 200 Back.

Freel, Maggie Johnson, Annie Murer and Hope Westphal combined to place 12th in the 800 Free, 13th in the 400 Free and 20th in the 200 Free relays. Freel, Johnson, and Murer swam with Connelly Furnish to place 23rd in the 200 Medley and 33rd in the 400 Medley relays.

Maggie Johnson was the second highest scorer on the club for the weekend. Johnson placed 10th in both the 1000 and 1650 Free, 24th in the 200 Fly, 26th in the 500 Free, and 29th in the 400 IM.

Hope Westphal placed 11th in the 1650, 18th in the 1000 and 20th in the 500 Free races, and 25th in the 400 IM.

Dathan Wolf was the high scorer on the men’s side for the club, finishing in 19th in the 100 Back and 25th in the 200 Back. Wolf also swam with Cole Ehara, Misha Machavariani, and Judah Nickoll to place 28th in the 800 Free relay. Wolf also combined with Pratt Badve, Misha Machavariani and Cavan Stilson to place 29th and 31st in the 200 and 400 Medley relays.
