CLUB OLYMPIA COMPETES AT INDIANA SWIMMING SENIOR STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Eleven Club Olympia swimmers competed in the 2022 Indiana Swimming Senior State Championships this past weekend.  The meet, comprised of over 1000 of the state’s top senior swimmers (typically high school and college age) who met difficult qualifying time standards was held on the campus of Indiana University at the Counsilman Billingsley Aquatic Center. 

Club Olympia men and women combined for a 16th place finish out of 60 club teams from around Indiana.   The Club Olympia lady swimmers finished an impressive 14th among the state’s women’s teams.   Much larger teams from Carmel and Fishers and club teams associated with IU, Purdue, and Notre Dame swimming finished in the top five.  

Ashley Freel led Club Olympia in scoring with 54 points which included a podium 5th place finish in the 200M Fly.    Freel also placed 9th in the 100M Fly, 18th in the 200M Free, 22nd in the 50M Free, 24th in the 100M Back, and 26th in the 100M Free.

Hope Westphal with 34 points, placed 15th in the 1500M Free, 16th in the 800M Free, 19th in the 400M Free, 20th in the 400M IM, and 29th in the 200M Free. Maggie Johnson, who scored 33 individual points, finished 14th in the 1500M Free, 13th in the 200M Fly, and 19th in the 800M Free.  Johnson was 32nd in the 400M IM and had top 50 finishes in both the 200M and 400M Free. Annie Murer and 13 year old Connelly Furnish competed in a combined six individual events achieving four personal best times between them.  

Various combinations of Freel, Johnson, Westphal, Murer and Furnish competed in several different relays with a top podium finish of 6th place in the 800M Free Relay by Freel, Westphal, Johnson and Furnish.   The ladies also finished 16th in the 200M & 400M Free Relays as well as 19th in the 200 and 400 Medley Relays.

For the Club Olympia Men, 15 year old Misha Machavariani led with 14 points.  Machavariani took 18th in the 800M & 1500M Free, 25th in the 200M Breast, 26th in the 400 IM, and 42nd in the 100M Breast.

Dathan Wolf had top finishes of 36th in the 200M Back and 45th in the 100M Back in his four individual events.   Judah Nickoll and Cole Ehara swam in a combined total of five individual events achieving personal best times in two of them.

Various combinations of Machavariani, Wolf, Nickoll, Ehara, Pratt Badve and 14 year old Lane Mellencamp swam in several different relays with a top finish of 20th in the 800M Free relay where Mellencamp led off and was able to achieve an Age Group State Championship qualifying time in the 200 Free.   The men’s relays also placed 21st in the 200M Free Relay, 25th in the 400M Medley and Free Relays, and 27th in the 200M Medley Relay.

During the past week, Club Olympia also had athletes competing at season ending qualifying meets at Pike High School and Center Groved High School in Indianapolis and in the Shields Park Summer Splash meet in Seymour, Indiana with hopes of achieving qualifying times for the upcoming Age Group State and the CE Indiana Divisional Championships.

Mellencamp was able to qualify for two additional Age Group State Championship events, the 50M and 100M Free at Seymour.   Josh Pendleton achieved the 50M Breast Age Group State Championship cut time.   Also at Seymour, Jasper Nickoll, Sanaa Kulkarni, Emily Meek, Vivan Shah, Jesse Isaacs, and Shourya Malviya achieved the divisional cut times in a combined eight events.

In the meet at Pike High School, Club Olympia swimmers achieved a combined 81 total personal records and a combined seven total divisional cuts by Cavan Stilson, Lily Pendleton, Xavier Zhang, and Daxton Wolf.

The Center Grove Competition saw Club Olympia Age Group swimmers take over 25 top five finishes in various individual and relay events with over half of those being first place finishes.  Lily Pendleton, Aashka Shah and Daxton Wolf all added to their list of Divisionals qualified events. 

Next up for Club Olympia is the Indiana Swimming Age Group State Championships to be held at the IU Natatorium on the campus of IUPUI the weekend of July 22 – 24.
